1) Defeat Da Feet Fungus

Yea, it’s gross, I know, but the thing is, when your feet are bundled up all winter, they might start to sweat. That, mixed with the darkness inside your boots or shoes, creates a perfect environment for fungus aka athlete’s foot to flourish.

Dr. Dina Tsentserensky notes, ‘if athlete’s foot goes unchecked and untreated it can get into the nails and once there, it’s much harder to get rid of.’

If you already have athlete’s foot, get yourself some topical antifungal medication to treat the fungus and prevent it from spreading.

Once the fungus hits the nails, oral medication and/or laser treatment are the best courses of action to take.

Also, get rid of those 100% cotton socks, they keep moisture on your foot. Get into some socks that are a combo of cotton/synthetic fiber which work to wick it away.

2) Win Against Dry Skin

If you have the opposite problem during winter, i.e., your feet get very dry, you’ll want to moisten those puppies up before getting into sandals.

The best way to do that is to apply an over the counter cream like Eucerin, Curel or Lubriderm.

‘It’s important to use cream on very dry skin in lieu of lotion as cream tends to moisturize better because it’s oil based and thicker’, adds Dr. Oliver Zong.

In addition to moistening up that skin, you’ll want to remove any callouses or dead skin caked on with a pumice stone or ped egg.

3) Treat Yo Self

This is an easy one. Easy, but effective in getting your feet sandal ready.

If you’re reading an article about foot care, you likely already know the joys of a pedicure.

Get a nice foot bath, a rub down, get those cuticles in order, maybe get those nails all painted up before popping on those sandals.

A caveat though; you don’t want to catch anything while getting your foot glam on, so make sure the tubs/foot baths are clean before you use them. If you’re so inclined you can even bring your own instruments for peak safety.-

Oh, and one more thing, if you’re planning on slipping into flip-flops, make sure they aren’t flat. You’re going to want some arch support.

Not a good example of winter foot care!

While spring may be just around the corner, and that’s pretty great, it’s not here quite yet. Which is decidedly less great.

Given that there’s a bit of winter left to endure and the fact that everyone has spring on the mind, now seems a good time to drop some winter foot care tips.

As a reminder. A just-in-case kind of thing so your feet are all good to go for when sandal weather hits.

Side note, if you live in the Southern Hemisphere you’re going to be heading into the cold soon, so this serves as a heads up to you.

It goes without saying that first and foremost, keeping your feet warm is of utmost importance.

That means a bit more than just proper shoes and socks to combat the cold. You don’t want to heat your feet to the point that you’re soaking your socks in sweat since this will ultimately make you colder when you head back outside after work. 

Investing some time in finding the right sock is well worth it. It is always better to pick a sock that is a blend of different materials i.e. cotton and acrylic since cotton tends to absorb the sweat while acrylic will wick the it away from the foot.

Whether you’re prone to sweating or not, you’re likely aware that the dry winter air dries out the skin rather quickly. If not taken care of this can often turn into cracked or fissured skin, which can lead to bleeding. 

The pain associated with these skin fissures, generally in the back of the heel and sole of the feet, is exacerbated by the fact that you’re up walking on them all day.

If your feet are already excessively dry or are just starting to get there, the fix is simple; moisturize them daily. Dr. Oliver Zong of NYC Footcare recommends using an oil based cream or lotion, especially in the winter months, since the oil will work to keep your skin better hydrated. Any over the counter brand will work if used consistently.

Essentially it’s all about finding that balance between moist and dry because the excessive moisture combined with the dark environment of the shoe can create a breeding ground for fungus!

This, in effect, can cause athlete’s foot and, even worse, fungal toenails, which are quite difficult to treat.

To keep your shoes fungus free just hit them with a bit of anti-fungal powder or try spraying them with Lysol to eliminate any fungus or bacteria brewing in the wet shoe.

Look out the window. It’s that time of year.

What do these have in common?

Dinosaurs. Obviously.

However, one of these things is not like the others.

Hint: it’s the one that doesn’t end in -saurus.

Brachymetatarsia.

It’s got a certain dinosaur ring to it though, right?

Silliness aside, a brachymetatarsia is basically a very short toe:

The underlying issue is that one of the long bones in the foot directly behind the toes, the metatarsals, is abnormally short. ‘Brachy’ being Greek for ‘short’.

Hence ‘brachymetatarsia’.

The condition most frequently occurs in the 4th digit as shown above, though it can happen to any toe. As a side note, now you know how the toes are numbered. Thumb toe is number 1 in our hearts and minds. And on our feet.

You’re learning all kinds of things today.

Anyway, the condition is generally a congenital one, i.e., something you’re born with, and is characterized by a premature closing of the growth plate in one or more of the metatarsals. Injury can also cause the growth plate to fracture which would lead to this condition as well.

Most often, the defect is recognized between the ages of 4-15 while the person continues to grow and one toe (or more), well, doesn’t.

Brachys, as we’ll call them, usually occur on one foot, or unilaterally, and predominantly to women and are not as rare as one might think.   When asked, Dr. Zong of NYC Footcare stated that ‘almost every patient who contacts us about treatment of brachymetatarsia thinks they are the only ones who have it.’

Dr Zong attributes this misconception to the fact that most people who have the condition tend to hide that fact thus making people think it’s not as common as it actually is.

There are a number of issues associated with having a brachy, such as; walking, wearing shoes, as well as pain.

In terms of walking, having one toe that’s markedly shorter in the order of biggest to smallest can affect weight transfer. According to HealthCommunities.com, ‘this occurs because the toes are gradually longer and as weight is transferred to the forefoot, the next longest toe assumes the weight. Brachymetatarsia disrupts this process.’

Over time this can cause the affected toe to move upwards, on top of the other toes, which according to Dr. Zong of NYC Footcare, ‘can be painful, and often makes it difficult to fit into shoes comfortably.’

Additionally, and of perhaps equal import, is the stigma associated with having a brachy as it is quite noticeable. Dr. Zong notes, ‘it’s not uncommon to hear from these patients that they keep their shoes on or hide their feet when at the beach, pool or even gym locker rooms.’

Fortunately, there are both surgical and non-surgical treatments available for a brachy.

Non-surgically it’s possible to get specialized shoes with extra depth to accomodate the raised toe or add padding to prevent the floating toe from rubbing up on the top of the shoe.

If that seems like a somewhat cumbersome, difficult and/or temporary fix, the surgeons at NYC Footcare offer some surgical solutions. ‘Often patients are unaware that the condition can be corrected surgically’ says Dr. Zong.

According to Dr. Zong, surgical treatments vary but the recovery period is roughly 2-4 months following any of these procedures which are performed on an outpatient basis.

Rocks, stones, crystals… they symbolize so much. The eclectic and esoteric, unexplained and mystic, magical and geological realms are all present in each precious stone. I had the pleasure of this ultrarelaxing sensation when I attended, upon my request, a Crystal Healing session delivered by my new friend the Gem Maven. LN: If someone doesn’t know much about crystals, how would you describe the terms ‘crystal healing’?

And I ALWAYS have on me any combination of crystal necklaces, pendants, bracelets, earrings, crystals in pockets and elsewhere. I make and drink gem elixirs. I also concoct gem essences. Certain crystals are kept by my computer for protection from electro-magnetic pollution.

LN: How long have you been known as the Gem Maven?

GM: I have been known as the Gem Maven for about 4 years now. When my crystals and gemstones journey began to turn into a full-fledged passion (approximately 8 years ago), an intuitive friend labeled me as the “Keeper of the Crystals.” Actually, she was the first one to tell me that she “saw” me involved with crystals and crystal healing in prior lives.

LN: How has your life changed since working with them?

GM: Clear quartz. Many years ago, I was given a clear quartz crystal. At that time, I remember being “wowed” by its sheer magnificence.  Back then, however, I had no interest in delving into its history, chemical composition or any other geological history or metaphysical application.  Matter of fact, if someone would have suggested my pursuing a degree in Geology, I would have asked them if they are crazy. I have now embraced the all-natural way in my diet and hobbies, as well. An  interest in alternative medicine led me to Acupuncture, and I now receive regular treatments for anxiety. I have been a coffee addict* for 13 years; ever since I had my first sip of a Caramel Frappuccino at an airport Starbucks. The orthotic, as we all know, is a fantastic remedy to issues associated with over-pronation and flat feet, i.e., plantar fasciitis, ankle pain and knee pain among other things. However, there are a couple drawbacks to this otherwise great solution.

Namely, orthotics only work when wearing shoes, which you likely don’t do 24/7, and they’re infinitely losable as any wearer can surely attest.
