One of the women at the center of the David Petraeus sex scandal seems to have a bit of a checkered past. Jill Kelley is not only millions of dollars in debt, she also founded a cancer research charity that was run out of her home, the only problem is that Kelley never spent a dime of the donated money to research.
Kelley and her husband Scott operated the charity out of one of their mansions, the Doctor Kelley Cancer Foundation claimed on its tax forms that it “shall be operated exclusively to conduct cancer research and to grant wishes to terminally ill adult cancer patients.”
But all of the initial seed money that was raised was spent on parties, entertainment, travel and attorney fees and not cancer research.
Records show that by the end of 2007, the Kelley’s charity had gone bankrupt, having conveniently spent exactly the same amount of money, $157,284, as it started with and not a dollar more, according to its 990 financial form. Of that, $43,317 was billed as “Meals and Entertainment,” $38,610 was assigned to “Travel,” another $25,013 was spent on legal fees, and $8,822 went to “Automotive Expenses.”
The Kelley’s charity also spent $12,807 on office expenses and supplies, which seems a bit high for a charity that is run out of your home. The shady couple also billed $7,854 for utilities and telephones of their home to their charity.
Natalie Khawam, who happens to be Jill Kelley’s sister, is listed as the only other officer of the charity that spent zero on cancer research. Khawam also filed chapter 7 bankruptcy, owing creditors well over a million dollars.
